Kanpur, Feb 21: The Congress is likely to approach the high court for quashing the First Information Report (FIR) that was filed against its General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Monday for allegedly violating rules during a roadshow in Uttar Pradesh. Congress leader Digvijaya Singh alleged that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati directed the authorities to file a police complaint against Gandhi.

"Rahul Gandhi knows law and follows it. He never does anything that can violate laws," Singh said on Tuesday. "The way administration has behaved in the matter, it shows that after successful campaign by Rahul Gandhi, the actions were taken by Mayawati as they are scared of the successful campaign," Singh said. Union Minister Kapil Sibal also criticised the move taken against Gandhi over the roadshow.

Sibal said that the district administration had given the permission for the road show on February 17. He said that the permission was suddenly withdrawn at the last minute on February 19 when all the arrangements had been made.
"Everybody when knew Shivratri is ...if administration was so much concerned then they should have acted on time," Sibal said during a press conference in Lucknow on Tuesday. According to reports,Gandhi was permitted to organize the roadshow along a 20-km route against the application made by the party for covering a 37-km route.

Gandhi got into trouble for allegedly choosing to undertake a longer road-show than the route permitted to him by the district administration. Around 57.2 percent polling was recorded in Uttar Pradesh where the fourth phase of the assembly elections ended peacefully on Sunday evening. Uttar Pradesh will go to vote in three more stages on Feb 23, Feb 28 and Mar 3. Counting of votes is on March 6 along with all four other states that are going to elections this year.
