Even Mahatma Gandhi believed in Ram: Rajnath Singh

Nagpur, Oct 5 (UNI) BJP President Rajnath Singh today wondered why the Congress denied the existence of Lord Ram, even when Mahatma Gandhi believed in him.

Speaking at a function to launch the Sanskrit service of a news syndication organisation here, Mr Singh said that Mahatma Gandhi had visualised ''Ram Rajya'' in the country after India's independence.

The Father of the Nation began every day with the recitation of the Bhajan ''Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram,'' he added.

The last words uttered by the Mahatma after being shot by an assassin were ''Hey Ram'', the BJP president said. ''These were Gandhiji's political and spiritual visions. If Lord Ram does not exist, why did Gandhiji make him an integral part of his life?'', he asked.

''Could the Father of the Nation have uttered Lord Ram's name and prayed to Him if he did not believe in His existence? Mahatma Gandhi could not have done this without knowing that Lord Ram existed,'' he said.

However, it was unfortunate that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government led by the Congress, which swore by Mahatma Gandhi's ideals, had submitted an affidavit in a court asserting that there was no historical evidence to show that Lord Ram ever existed, Mr Singh regretted.

How could the government even cast a shadow of doubt over a matter of faith of millions of Indians, he charged.
